The Works Wonders concert was going well. It was more formal than the usual canteen concert because, instead of the applause going to the more popular artists, it was regulated and conducted so as to cause a continuous roar of enthusiastic sound. Shirley was popular and her singing of âIâll walk beside youâ was a natural riot. There were no encores so that when it was over Nicholas slipped round to the back of the room and sat on the piece of bench that Judy had kept for him. The worksâ band had just started on a medley of tunes, most of which were on the noisy side. They talked to each other in whispers.
âWhat did you talk to Clara about last night?â
âI didnât, she talked to me. She was feeding the chickens and I met her. It was about responsibility, really. She said that she thought we all had certain responsibilities for which we should be prepared to sacrifice everything. I thought at first that she was talking about the war, but afterwards, thinking it over, I wasnât sure. She was on a very highfalutin plane, believe me. All about caring for the weak and helpless who are in your charge. She said that was her faith and by that she lived. You must admit a person who feels like that wouldnât do in an old lady, would she?â
âProbably talking for effect.â
âI donât think so. In any case you can find out for yourself because she said, amongst other things, wouldnât I like to bring you to the house, that you mustnât think that because we had a death we were morbid and wouldnât see visitors.â
Nicholas grinned.
âBit of a shock to her if she knew sheâd got a visitor sleeping in every night, but I will come back with you after work to-day because theyâll have got the result of the post-mortem, and I expect youâll find the house full to the brim of sleuths.â
Judy turned a startled face to him.
âNo! I thought theyâd just send a Black Maria and take Clara away.â
âNot at all, my poor innocent. Say the old lady has died of arsenic, everybody can be as certain as they like that Clara put it in her soup, but unless they can find that she had the arsenic in her possession they wonât be able to do anything about her, and, as a matter of fact, if they find the old ladyâs died of poisoning, which Iâm certain they will, Iâm afraid poor old Miss Rose will be harried around a bit. After all, if sheâs going to be quite well off, itâs she who gained by the death, not Clara.â Judy gave him a pitying look.
âThe woolliest-headed detective in the world couldnât suspect Miss Rose. Poor pet, she simply adored her mother.â
âI know, my lamb, but the lawâs the law, and if somebody did the old lady in then theyâre bound to have a careful look over everybody who can have gained by it, thatâs why Iâm coming back from work with you.
